Grasshoppers

We have a newly planted vinyard and praktising regenerative viticulture. Each every row we have high grass . The other row we keep low for now. At the moment we are facing a fall out from about 10% . At the same time we see about 3 grasshoppers per m2. At the moment we think the fall out is due to grasshopper. Is there any practice what can be done to overcome this issue?

Hi Dolf! Congrats on your new planting – starting a new vineyard from scratch is always exciting! Sorry to hear you’re having some issues with it.

You might want to start by keeping all the grass low to expose the grasshoppers to birds some more. It’s an easy first step.

Have you seen them actively feeding on the vines? If yes, you might want to take a leaf sample and investigate if your vines have a nutrient imbalance – chewing insects are attracted to plants the at are out of balance (Dr. Thomas Dykstra has great research on the subject). If needed, a foliar spray of nutrients can help restore balance.

Are there any other potential insects that might be eating your vines? Cut worms can be an issue where I am, especially with longer grass.

Thanks for the feedback. I will take leaf samples tomorrow for analyses.
