How to know which certification to go for?

There are so many different certifications around the world, from organic and biodynamic to all the national and local sustainability schemes. Now there seem to be lots of different regenerative ones popping up. How should someone choose the right one for them?

This is a good question and tricky to answer. My view is it depends on your routes to market. For example, if you sell directly to retailers (as we often do) then until they have decided which certifications to recognise you are taking a risk. However we’ve taken the decision at Maison Mirabeau to follow the certifications which make the most sense to us and our growers. Things to consider are costs, regularity of audits, farm plans, are they a profit or non-profit, royalty fees on products sold etc.

Whole Foods have approved 4 different certifications, so it won’t be a one size fits all until and unless governments define regenerative agriculture and create national standards (which we’re years away from right now). So I think private certifications will prevail for the coming 5 years at least.
